Culpeper Area Information
Established in 1759 as the Town of Fairfax by the Virginia House of Burgesses, Culpeper's rich history began shortly after Culpeper County's formation in 1748. Named to honor Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron—proprietor of the vast Northern Neck territory—the town's original ten-block design was surveyed by none other than George Washington himself and remains the historic core of downtown Culpeper today. Though it received a post office under 'Culpeper Court House' in 1795, the town continued appearing as Fairfax on most maps until 1869, when the Virginia Assembly officially renamed it Culpeper to eliminate confusion with similar postal locations in Fairfax County. This historic Virginia community seamlessly blends its colonial heritage with modern charm, making it a distinctive location for property investment.
